How to Capture Custom Fields & Values from the Query String

Capture custom variables like UTM parameters or a hop ID from the query string or registration form in AEvent, then pass them to your autoresponder or CRM.

When someone registers for your event, AEvent can capture extra information about them and pass it along to your autoresponder or CRM. You can add two kinds of registration fields, and they behave differently. Picking the right one is the whole game, so let's start there.

The two field types

Before you add anything, decide which type you need.

Best for

Values that ride in on your link, like UTM tags, affiliate IDs, or hop IDs

Extra questions you collect on the form itself, like Age or Company

Where the value comes from

The page URL, for example ?utm_content=ad1

Do you re-paste your form code?

Yes

Both types end up available to map into your integrations. The only difference is how the value gets into AEvent. Pick your type below and follow that section.

Part A: Capturing a Query field (UTM and other link values)

Use this when the value is already sitting in your registration link, like a UTM parameter. AEvent reads it straight from the URL, so your visitor never types a thing.

Step 1: Open your Registration settings

  • Open your campaign and go to Registration.

Step 2: Add the field as a Query type

  • Click Add Registration Field.

  • In Field Name, enter the name of your parameter, for example UTM.

  • Set Form Type to Query.

  • Click Add.

Good to know: A Query field won't appear in your Form Registration Code, and that's expected. Because the value comes from the URL and not from a box your visitor fills in, there's nothing to add to your form. You don't need to copy or re-paste your form code for a Query field.

Step 3: Put the parameter on your link

  • Send traffic to your registration page with the parameter on the end of the link, for example https://yourpage.com/register?utm_content=ad1.

When someone registers from that link, AEvent captures the value automatically. The name in your link has to match the field name you created exactly, for example utm_content.

Step 4: It's ready for your integrations

Once captured, the value is saved on the registrant and available to send to your autoresponder or CRM, the same as any other field. To map it, head to Passing your value to your CRM at the bottom of this article.

Part B: Capturing a Custom Forms field (a question on your form)

Use this when you want to collect a brand new piece of information on the registration form itself, like Age or Company. Because this adds a real field to your form, you'll update your form code in this case.

Step 1: Add the field as a Custom Forms type

  • On the Registration tab, click Add Registration Field.

  • In Field Name, enter your field name, for example Age.

  • Set Form Type to Custom Forms.

  • Click Add.

Step 2: Copy your updated Form Registration Code

Adding a Custom Forms field updates your Form Registration Code with the new field. Copy the updated code and paste it onto your registration page so the new field is included. In the example below, the new Age field has been added to the code.

Important: If you skip this paste step, your page is still running the old form code and the new field won't be collected. Any time you add or change a Custom Forms field, re-copy the latest code and paste it onto your page.

Step 3: Send it to your CRM

Continue to Passing your value to your CRM below to map the field into your integration.

Passing your value to your CRM

Whichever type you used, the steps to send the value to your autoresponder or CRM are the same.

Step 1: Open your integration

  • Go to the Integration section of your campaign and open your autoresponder, for example AWeber.

Step 2: Create a single field for the value

  • Create a Single Field for the value you captured.

Step 3: Map it to your captured field

  • From the dropdown, choose Custom Field, then select the field name you created, for example UTM or Age.

That's it. Confirm the value is passing from your registration page into AEvent, and AEvent hands it off to your integration. Now you can see exactly where your registrants came from and tailor your follow-up to match.
